When someone needs a tradie right now, they don't browse. They search "electrician near me" or "plumber near me" and call whoever shows up first. Here's what actually determines who that is, and how to get your business into that spot.
Claim and fully fill out your Google Business Profile
This is one of the biggest factors in local search, and it's also the one most established businesses get wrong by leaving it half finished. Add your actual trade category, the areas you cover, real photos of finished jobs, and correct hours and phone number. An unclaimed or incomplete profile is one of the most common reasons a genuinely good business doesn't show up.
Keep your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere
Google cross checks your business details across your website, your Google listing, Facebook, and any directories you're in. If your phone number is slightly different in one place, or your business name is written two different ways, it creates doubt about which listing is actually correct, and that doubt can quietly cost you the ranking.
Get reviews, and actually reply to them
Reviews are one of the clearest signals Google uses to decide who to show first, and they're also what convinces the person searching to call you over the next result. A quick text to a happy customer asking for a review works better than most people expect. Replying to reviews, even a short thank you, shows the profile is active and looked after.
Make sure your website actually says where you work
This sounds obvious, but plenty of trade websites never actually state their service area in plain words anywhere on the page. If you cover Hamilton, Cambridge, and Te Awamutu, say so clearly on your homepage. Google needs to read it just as much as a person does.
Keep the site fast and usable on a phone
Almost every "near me" search happens on a phone, standing in a driveway or a kitchen with a problem that needs sorting now. If the site is slow to load or hard to read on a small screen, people back out and call the next result instead, even if you were ranked higher.
None of this needs to happen all at once. Start with your Google Business Profile since it makes the biggest difference for the least effort, then work through the rest over the following weeks.
